True, consultants advise clients on how to better manage themselves and their organizations. Yet, sometimes consultants need consulting, too.

When a Consultant Needs Consulting
A large
global consulting firm had a Capability
organizational problem. The firm needed help assessing, developing
and retaining talent. Innolect Associates were engaged to create
a self-development program that would serve as implementation of
a 360-degree feedback and assessment tool. The an Innolect Associate
and the firm were the first participants.
The
new assessment evaluated partners on an expanded set of competencies.
Most partners had not been hired based on these competencies, and
many would have to engage in focused self-development to obtain
the skills. Together, Innolect and the firm:
- Created
a self-development resource that allows partners to “drill down”
on each competency to descriptions of specific, behaviors
- Provided tips and tools partners can use to assess whether they are using the competency/skill in real-life situations
- Identified specific books, articles, internal training and external programs to help partners improve capabilities with each competency
Results. The firm created more than an assesment
tool--it gained a self-development capability that be rolled out
of the entire firm.
